What is Eid al-Adha?
At the end of the Hajj (annual pilgrimage to Mecca), Muslims throughout the world celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). In 2011, Eid al-Adha will begin on or around November 6th, and will last for three days.
What does Eid al-Adha commemorate?
During the Hajj, Muslims remember and commemorate the trials and triumphs of theProphet Abraham. The Qur'an describes Abraham as follows:
"Surely Abraham was an example, obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the polytheists. He was grateful for Our bounties. We chose him and guided him unto a right path. We gave him good in this world, and in the next he will most surely be among the righteous." (Qur'an 16:120-121)
One of Abraham's main trials was to face the command of Allah to kill his only son. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to Allah's will. When he was all prepared to do it, Allah revealed to him that his "sacrifice" had already been fulfilled. He had shown that his love for his Lord superceded all others, that he would lay down his own life or the lives of those dear to him in order to submit to God.
Why do Muslims sacrifice an animal on this day?
During the celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims commemorate and remember Abraham's trials, by themselves slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, camel, or goat. This action is very often misunderstood by those outside the faith.
Allah has given us power over animals and allowed us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name at the solemn act of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred.
The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is mostly given away to others. One-third is eaten by immediate family and relatives, one-third is given away to friends, and one-third is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes our willingness to give up things that are of benefit to us or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah's commands. It also symbolizes our willingness to give up some of our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. We recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we should open our hearts and share with others.
It is very important to understand that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by Muslims, has nothing to do with atoning for our sins or using the blood to wash ourselves from sin. This is a misunderstanding by those of previous generations: "It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him." (Qur'an 22:37)
The symbolism is in the attitude - a willingness to make sacrifices in our lives in order to stay on the Straight Path. Each of us makes small sacrifices, giving up things that are fun or important to us. A true Muslim, one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord, is willing to follow Allah's commands completely and obediently. It is this strength of heart, purity in faith, and willing obedience that our Lord desires from us.
What else do Muslims do to celebrate the holiday?
On the first morning of Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world attend morning prayers at their local mosques. Prayers are followed by visits with family and friends, and the exchange of greetings and gifts. At some point, members of the family will visit a local farm or otherwise will make arrangements for the slaughter of an animal. The meat is distributed during the days of the holiday or shortly thereafter.

Dona Nobis Pacem 2011 - The Dreamers...
... Every time that I’ve taken part in Blogblast for Peace I’ve tried to find a new viewpoint to the idea of Peace:
- for Blogblast 2008 I spoke out against the greed that causes war,
- in 2009 I made a video that dealt with the war against child abuse and domestic violence,
- and 2010 I looked at the miracles we create when we refuse to believe in an inevitable (negative) outcome.
But when it came to planning for 2011 my brain went blank ... so I avoided the question by designing some Peace badges for Mimi instead.

Welcome to the 8th launch of BlogBlast For Peace aka Dona Nobis Pacem in the blogosphere.
What is it? A small group of bloggers answered a challenge I tossed one angst-filled October day in 2006. I wanted to know what would happen if all bloggers everywhere signed their name across a globe and all posted the SAME POST on the SAME DAY. I created a graphic and made the first one. I asked them to write "Dona nobis pacem" which is Latin for "grant us peace" across the graphics image and post it on their blogs in November. Fifty-two people responded enthusiastically and soon it began to spread like a beautiful lyric across the internet.
What we have built since 2006 is a core of distinct and remarkable individuals called "peace bloggers." They write. They draw. They paint beautiful words and images. They help and encourage each other. They may differ in philosophy and politic, but they find a way to peaceably debate. And then they sign their names to a promise. To a hope. To a dream we all have. To one day live in a world of peace.
Not all of them blog. Many blog peace on Facebook and Twitter. All have earned a special place in my heart.
They continue to amaze me with their inspiration and dedication to the peace globes, which now fly in 53 countries and countless provinces and cities across the world. They are housed in an online gallery here and shown daily throughout the year on thousands of blogs. Every November 4th - which is my grandfather's birthday - we fly them in unity. We launch a newBlogBlast For Peace. We hear new stories. We welcome newbie peace bloggers. We learn about the world around us, how alike we all are, how human. It is a beautiful thing to behold.
This man, my Papa, is the reason I hold tight to the peace globes. Read his story below. I wonder if he knows what an inspiration he's become to so many... long after he left this world. I wonder if he knew that earth wrapped marble would become a symbol of peace and hope. He was that to me. And now he is that to you.

Winter on Amethyst Carcanet
Fahredin Shehu
November 2011
Winter enters akin to a bride with the smile,
In a full moon- face warm and gentle,
What happens today my Lord?
of the desert rose throughout the Oriental pearl,
Radiates nothing but Love
An old friend here calls me in urge to please and
The hidden heavens of my Soul unfolds their Beauty
Another friend here calls to please me and
The sparkling Constellations of heart’s rib
I knew in the very morning when fog,
Started to abandon fields harvested golden
Wheat;
And the Sun released nothing but Love,
Divine Love, as last night I saw,
My enlarged Phallus
The gate of Miracle shall soon open
And the awards from You my Lord
Are dropping as rain on Lemongrass, and
The petals of the Glass- Rose
A bestowment for the intimate prayers and bliss;
How huge is Your reward Oh Eternal…?
How blessed are tears dropping in,
My left hand
Where the rays of my heart emanates a Divine
Bliss and the crystal tear of my being felt in
My right hand that paint this paper and
The electromagnetic plates in layer assembled
To draw your Magnitude and the all color spheres
Of my “I” that split from your light hand of creation
Forgive my naïve speech my Lord
As my tongue knows only such and my Being sees
The grandeur of Your Creation as unseen miracle
In my ears the melody sings Love
In my hand the only gift is Love
In my heart the only gift is Love
In my extremities the only motion is Love
In my Goblet the only liqueur is Love
In my Rose heart the only Light and
Perfume is Love
My progeny shall be the pride for the Mankind
And the morsel this Angeloid shall take is Love
And the only milk Angeloid shall take is Love
And that milk turns blood, veins and flesh and
Bones and all of them harmoniously arranged
Is nothing but Love…?
Nothing but Love…!!!
